An outdoor shift in the cold

Cold turns standing still into a different problem. Tissue that is cold moves less willingly, so the ordinary standing-shift complaints — heavy legs, a stiff low back, an ache down one side — arrive sooner and feel more like stiffness than fatigue. On top of that you are wearing layers that restrict movement, gloves that reduce what your hands can do, and boots chosen for warmth rather than for moving in.

Security on a gate, a market stall, a site in February, marshalling a car park, a stable yard, a fishing boat deck. You cannot go inside and you cannot walk away from the position.

What the cold adds

Cold tissue is less compliant. Muscle and connective tissue move more easily warm than cold. That is why the first movement of a cold shift feels stiff and the same movement mid-shift does not, and it is the main reason a winter standing shift feels different from a summer one.

You brace against the cold, continuously. Shoulders up around the ears, arms in, hands in pockets, jaw tight. That is a sustained low-level muscular hold that has nothing to do with the job, and by the end of a cold shift it is a substantial part of what you are feeling.

Shivering is muscular work. Involuntary and tiring, and it is one reason a cold shift leaves you more depleted than the same shift warm.

Your layers restrict you. A heavy coat limits shoulder movement, waterproof trousers limit hip flexion, and a hood removes most of your neck rotation. Everything you can do in shirtsleeves you can do less of in a winter coat.

Your extremities go first and report last. Hands and feet get cold, then numb, and numb is not a signal you can rely on. That is a genuine safety issue, not a comfort one.

Standing still is worse in the cold than moving about. Same mechanism as always — the calves are not pumping — with the addition that movement is also what keeps you warm.

Nothing here needs you to remove a layer, leave the position, or be seen doing anything unusual under a coat.

Keep something moving, all the time

In the cold the usual advice to move periodically is wrong. Periodic movement lets you cool between bouts, and cool tissue is exactly the problem.

The better pattern on a cold shift is small, continuous, low-effort movement: weight shifting from foot to foot, heels rising and falling gently, fingers opening and closing inside gloves, a slow rock forward and back. Not enough to look restless. Enough that nothing is fully still for long.

The check is whether you feel warm rather than whether you feel like you are exercising. Warm is the endpoint; if the small movements are not producing it, make them slightly larger rather than more frequent.

This is the one situation on this site where continuous low-grade movement beats a periodic block, and the reason is entirely about temperature.

Calf raises, which do two jobs

Feet under your hips, rise as far as the boots allow, lower slowly. Stop when the lowering stops being controlled.

In the cold this earns its place twice over: it is the standing shift’s most valuable movement, described in standing all day is its own problem, and it generates heat in the largest muscle group you can use without leaving your position.

Boots matter here. A high, stiff shaft may limit the ankle more than you expect, and a heavy sole changes the feel. Go to where the boot stops you rather than through it — the constraint is real and it is discussed further in shoes you can’t change out of.

The bracing, which you are doing without deciding to

Cold makes everyone pull their shoulders up and their arms in. It is involuntary and it is held for hours, and it is a large part of why a cold shift produces neck and shoulder ache in a job that involves no lifting at all.

Notice it, then let the shoulders drop. Then drop them further. Then let the jaw unclench so the teeth part slightly.

The check: can you feel your teeth touching? If yes, they should not be. Can you feel the weight of your arms hanging from your shoulders? If not, the shoulders are still up.

It will come back within a minute, because the cold has not gone anywhere. Come back to it whenever you notice. This is not a fix; it is repeatedly declining to hold something you were holding for free.

Hands and feet, and doing it early

This is the item on the page that is about safety rather than about discomfort.

Fingers and toes get cold first, then numb, and numbness removes your ability to tell how cold they are. So the timing rule is the opposite of the usual: move them while they are still merely cold, not once they have gone numb. Fingers opening and closing inside gloves. Toes curling and spreading inside boots. Ankle circles when you can get a foot off the ground.

If a hand or a foot has gone numb, or has gone white or waxy, or if pain has been replaced by nothing at all, that is not a movement problem. Get warm, get it looked at, and treat it as more serious than stiffness.

Start gently, because you are cold

Every movement described anywhere on this site assumes tissue that will move. Cold tissue is less willing, and the first repetition of anything on a cold shift is the one where people go too far because they are used to the summer version.

The rule: make the first movements smaller than you think you need, and let them get bigger. If the second attempt goes further than the first, you are warming up and the tissue is cooperating. If it does not, stay small. There is nothing to gain from arguing with a cold calf.

This is also the answer to what happens when you finally go inside: warm tissue moves better, so anything that requires range — a proper hip flexor lengthening, a real calf stretch — belongs at the end of the shift rather than during it.

What this doesn’t replace

None of this makes a cold shift a warm one, and none of it is a substitute for clothing that is adequate for the conditions, which is a health and safety matter rather than a movement one. What it does is stop you standing entirely still while cold, which is the specific combination that produces the worst version of the day.

Getting genuinely warm and then moving properly, once the shift is over, does more than everything above.

When it isn’t the ordinary kind

Numbness, white or waxy skin, blisters, or hands and feet that hurt intensely as they warm up need medical attention, not movement. Confusion, slurred speech, uncontrollable shivering or shivering that has stopped without you getting warm are emergencies.
