Movement that makes no noise

Being seen and being heard are different constraints and they exclude different things. A silent constraint permits large movements as long as they are quiet, and forbids small ones that click, creak or scuff. That inverts the usual list: a full standing side-bend is fine on a live call, and a discreet ankle circle in hard shoes on a wooden floor is not.

The situations: a microphone that is open, a room where someone is asleep, a library or exam hall, a recording, a shared wall with a neighbour below, a hospital ward at night.

What makes noise, and what you would not guess

Chairs. Almost every chair complains. Office chairs squeak at the gas lift, wooden chairs creak at the joints, plastic ones flex audibly. Any weight shift in a chair is a chair noise before it is a body noise, which means the standard invisible options — pelvic tilts, weight shifts — are riskier here than they are anywhere else.

Feet on hard floors. Shoes scuff. Heels tap. Rolling through the foot on a wooden or tiled floor is loud, and on a suspended floor it transmits downward to whoever is below.

Clothing. Stiff fabric rustles, a jacket shoulder creases audibly against a chair back, a belt buckle taps the desk edge, a lanyard swings and knocks. This is the category people forget, and on an open microphone it is louder than anything else on the list.

Your own breathing pattern. Any movement large enough to change how you breathe changes how you sound on a call. This is the constraint that actually rules things out on a live microphone: not the noise of the movement, but the audible effort afterwards.

Joints, occasionally. Necks and shoulders sometimes make a noise when they move. It is usually nothing, and it is unmistakable in a quiet room.

Notice what is absent: anything involving the feet on a hard floor, anything in a chair that creaks, and anything fast enough to change your breathing.

Isometrics, which is the answer to a live microphone

If the constraint is a hot mic, the technique is to load muscle without moving anything.

Press one palm against the other in front of your chest and push, steadily, without either hand winning. Nothing moves. Nothing makes a sound. The muscle across the chest and the arms is working.

Press your feet into the floor without lifting them. Press your knees outward against each other’s resistance. Press your back into the chair and hold, without changing the chair’s loading enough to make it creak. Draw your shoulder blades together and hold. Tighten the muscles around the front of your thighs and hold.

Come off the hold when the effort starts changing how you breathe. That is the exact stop condition on a live microphone: the moment you would be heard is the moment to stop, and it is directly detectable before it happens.

This does not substitute for movement — nothing changes position, so nothing gets a range back. What it does is give held muscle something other than stillness, which is a smaller benefit honestly stated.

Slow neck movement, led by the weight of the head

Necks are quiet if you go slowly. Let the head tip toward one shoulder under its own weight, without a hand pulling. Come back through the middle. The other side. Then rotation, slowly, both ways.

Stop when you feel the side of the neck lengthen — that is the useful point, and going past it is where the fast version starts making a noise and gets less safe at the same time.

If your neck makes a sound when it moves, that is common and generally nothing. In a silent room it is still a sound, so go smaller and slower rather than avoiding the movement entirely.

Take your shoes off, if the room allows it

The single most effective noise reduction available, and it converts an impossible situation into an ordinary one.

Barefoot or in socks on carpet, almost the entire standing list becomes available: calf raises, rolling through the foot, weight transfers, standing tailbone tucks. In hard shoes on a wooden floor, none of it is. The difference is the shoes and the floor, not the movement.

Whether this is acceptable depends entirely on where you are, and this is not a suggestion to do it in a place where it would be strange. Where it is fine — a hotel room, a home office, a quiet corner — it is the first move to make rather than the last resort. Related territory: shoes you can’t change out of, for the situations where this option does not exist.

The breath-paced side-bend

Lateral movement is almost entirely absent from a sedentary day and it happens to be one of the quietest things you can do.

Standing or sitting tall, let your torso lean slowly to one side, sliding one shoulder down and letting the ribs on the other side open. Pace it to a slow out-breath. Come back up on the in-breath. Then the other side.

Because you are pacing it to your breathing, it cannot be fast enough to be heard, and because it is a long curve rather than a fold there is nothing to bump into.

Stop when the two sides go the same distance, or when it becomes clear one is not going to match the other today.

Grip and jaw

The quietest item and the one with the largest silent cost. In a room where you must be quiet, most people hold tension somewhere: jaw, shoulders, a hand around a phone or a pen, sometimes the whole face.

Notice it, then let it go. Unclench the jaw so the teeth part slightly. Let the shoulders drop. Open the hand.

The check is whether you can feel your teeth touching. If you can, they should not be, and that is a question you can ask yourself at any point.

It is not movement and it is not a substitute for movement. It is the removal of a load you were carrying for no reason, which in a long silent stretch is not a small thing.

What this doesn’t replace

A silent constraint is genuinely restrictive and the list above is genuinely short. Isometric holds are the weakest item this site recommends anywhere, because nothing changes position, and position change is the mechanism everything else on this domain relies on. When the silence ends, the ordinary list applies again and it is better.

If the constraint is being watched rather than heard, the options are almost entirely different — see doing it where people can see you, which permits noise and forbids visibility, and note that the two lists barely overlap.

When it isn’t the ordinary kind

Isometric holds raise blood pressure while you do them, more than a movement of the same effort would. If you have a heart or blood-pressure condition, that is a question for your doctor rather than for this page, and gentle movement is the better default.

Pain that appears during a held contraction, rather than fatigue, means stop. Persistent pain of any kind is a clinician’s question and holding still more skilfully is not an answer to it.
