Standing on a packed train

Standing on a crowded commuter train is a stranger constraint than either sitting or standing still, because the floor keeps moving. You are not holding a position — you are continuously correcting one, with one hand occupied, in contact with people on at least two sides, and with no possibility of putting a foot anywhere other than exactly where it already is.

The constraint: no seat, no floor space, one hand committed to a rail or a strap, an audience pressed against you, and a duration set by the timetable.

What a standing commute actually does

One hand is up and holding, for the whole journey. Overhead rails and straps put one arm above shoulder height with a sustained low grip demand. That is an unusual position to hold for a long time and it is why the shoulder on your rail side is the part that complains first.

You brace against acceleration in one direction only. Trains accelerate and brake along their length, so if you are facing sideways you are resisting side-to-side, and if you are facing along the carriage you are resisting fore-and-aft. Either way, you pick a stance early and keep it, so the same leg takes the braking load at every station.

Your feet cannot move. This is the difference from standing at work. A stationary shift lets you shift your feet even if you cannot leave your post; a packed carriage does not, because the space around your shoes belongs to somebody else’s shoes. Standing with a fixed foot position is closer to being seated than it looks.

You are carrying something. A bag on one shoulder, usually the non-rail side, for the entire journey.

Everything is visible. The carriage is a small room full of people with nothing to look at, so anything obvious reads as odd. That is the same problem as doing it where people can see you, compressed into less space.

Everything here keeps at least one hand on the rail and no foot leaving the ground for longer than a moment. Nothing requires space you do not already occupy.

Weight transfer, which is nearly everything

Almost all the value on a standing commute comes from one habit: noticing which leg is taking the load and deliberately giving it to the other one.

You are already doing this unconsciously and badly. Most people brace with a preferred leg, and on a route with many stops that leg absorbs every deceleration in the journey. Consciously moving your weight across is invisible, needs no space, and works with your feet exactly where they are.

Change over whenever you notice you are on the same leg you were on last time you checked. That is a self-checking trigger and it beats any interval, because a busy route gives you more chances than a fast one.

The one caveat is real: do not be mid-transfer when the brakes come on. If you can hear or feel the train slowing, get square and hold. This is not a balance exercise and there is nothing to gain from being caught between feet.

Calf raises, small and holding on

Feet where they are, one hand firm on the rail, rise a small amount onto the balls of the feet and lower slowly. Small — the point is the calf action, not the height, and a large movement in a crowded carriage puts your head into somebody’s face.

Stop when the lowering stops being controlled, and only do this while the train is running at steady speed. Between stations, not approaching one.

The mechanism is the same as on a standing shift and is described more fully in standing all day is its own problem. What is different here is that the floor is moving, which is why the handhold is non-negotiable rather than optional.

Swapping the rail hand

This is the item people never think of and it addresses the part of the journey that hurts most.

If a rail or strap is reachable on your other side, use it for part of the journey. One arm held overhead for a whole commute is a real sustained demand, and alternating halves it in the simplest possible way.

Change when the held arm’s grip becomes something you are aware of. That awareness is late — it means the arm has been working for a while — so err toward changing before you expect to need to.

If only one rail is reachable, lower the hand to a seat back, a partition edge, or a vertical pole at some point in the journey instead. Any change of arm angle is worth more than none.

The tailbone tuck, standing braced

Bracing against movement makes most people stiffen the legs and arch the low back slightly, and holding that for a commute produces a low, central ache that eases the moment you sit down at the other end.

Standing normally, gently tuck the tailbone under so the lower back flattens a little, then let it release. Nobody can see it, it needs no space at all, and it directly opposes the position bracing creates.

Repeat until the flattening feels like it happens on its own. If it never quite does, that is worth noticing rather than forcing.

The bag, and the station as a trigger

A bag on one shoulder for a commute, twice a day, five days a week, is the most consistently one-sided load most people carry. Changing shoulders at every station stop makes the trigger automatic and removes the decision, which is what makes it survive a journey where you are thinking about something else.

What this doesn’t replace

A standing commute is not exercise and treating it as such is how people arrive at work already tired. Everything above makes the journey less uniformly one-sided; none of it converts standing on a train into something beneficial. If you get a seat, take it — sitting and standing are both single positions held, and alternating between them across a journey beats either one.

When it isn’t the ordinary kind

If you feel faint, unsteady, or unable to hold on reliably, sit down or get off at the next station. That is not a movement question and there is no version of this post that applies to it.

Pain travelling down an arm from the rail-hand side, numbness in the hand, or a shoulder that stops being able to reach overhead are clinician questions. New or one-sided calf pain or swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness need urgent medical attention.
