A day up a ladder

Painting a stairwell. Clearing gutters. Running cable through a ceiling void. Picking stock off a top shelf. Fitting signage. A step ladder or an extension ladder, and most of a day spent standing on a bar about as wide as two fingers.

The constraint on a ladder is unusual and worth stating precisely: it is not that movement is uncomfortable, it is that movement is dangerous. Three points of contact is the rule you were taught, and it is a good rule. So you stand still, deliberately, for as long as each bit of work takes. Then the only thing that lets you move is coming down — and coming down costs time, so you stay up longer than you meant to and reach further than you should.

This post is therefore mostly about the bottom of the ladder. That is not a dodge; it is the honest answer.

What standing on a rung actually does

Your forefoot is on a bar and your heel is on nothing. The arch is loaded across a narrow edge and the calf works continuously to hold the ankle where it is, because there is no heel contact to rest onto. That is different from standing on a floor, where the heel takes most of the load and the calf can be quiet.

You cannot shift your weight, because shifting your weight is what falls off ladders. Standing work that keeps you in one square metre is already the harder kind — that is the whole subject of a post you can’t leave — but there you can at least sway, lean on something, and swap which leg carries you. On a rung you cannot, and there is no rail to lean into. The weight stays where you put it.

One hand holds, one hand works, and it is the same hand every time. So the holding shoulder is elevated and gripping for hours while the working shoulder does the job. Grip fatigue does not stay in the hand; you will feel it in the forearm and then across the top of the shoulder.

The work is usually above you. That adds the overhead problem on top of everything else, and the overhead problem has its own answers, covered in working with your arms above your head. Worth reading alongside this rather than repeated here.

Your head is back for long stretches while your feet cannot move. Looking up at a gutter or a ceiling void extends the neck and holds it there, and unlike almost every other situation you cannot change your feet to change the angle.

If an item is not in the first group, it does not happen while your feet are off the ground. That includes anything that sounds harmless.

The two things that are safe up there

Change which hand holds. Not mid-reach and not mid-cut — at a natural pause, with both feet settled and the work put down or safely parked. Then hold with the other hand for the next stretch. Over a day this is the single most useful thing available on the ladder, because it stops one shoulder doing all the holding and one hand doing all the gripping.

Let your breath drop. Reaching and concentrating produce a held or shallow breath, high in the chest, and you will not notice until you check. Check by asking whether you can feel the bottom of your ribs move. If you cannot, let the next few breaths go lower and slower. That is it — no technique, and nothing that changes where your weight is.

Everything else people are tempted to do on a ladder — a calf stretch off the rung, a twist to see behind, reaching sideways instead of moving the ladder — belongs in the category of things that are fine on a floor and stupid at height. Do not do them.

Move the ladder more often, for the reason that matters

Overreaching is how people come off ladders. That is the reason to reposition, and it is a good enough reason on its own. The movement benefit is a side effect, but it is a large one, because every repositioning is a descent, a walk of a few steps, a lift and a climb — the most complete movement in the whole job. So do not treat the climb down as lost time. It is the interval your day contains.

What to do at the bottom, in the order it matters

You are down for thirty seconds anyway. This is what to spend them on.

Stand flat-footed and let your heels take the weight. After a stretch on a rung, the simplest and most useful thing is full contact with flat ground. Rock the weight back onto the heels, then to the whole foot, and feel the calf stop working.

Then calf raises, up and down, slowly. Rise onto the balls of both feet, then lower under control. Stop when the lowering stops being controlled — the lowering is the part that matters, and when it turns into a drop you are done.

Let your arms hang, and open your hands. Pay attention to the one that was gripping. Can you feel the weight of your arms hanging? If not, the shoulders are still up where the holding put them. Then spread the fingers and straighten them fully. A gripping hand has spent hours doing exactly one thing and the opposite of it takes two seconds.

Let your head hang forward. Chin toward chest, no hands, its own weight only. Go until you feel the back of the neck lengthen, and stop there. This is the counter to a morning spent looking up, and it is the item most likely to be missed because the neck does not complain until later.

Walk to where the ladder is going, rather than shuffling it. A normal stride, not a sideways drag with a ladder braced against your hip.

The whole set fits in the time it takes to reposition. It is the same principle as treating the fuel stop as the whole break: the interval already exists in the job, and the only question is whether it gets used.

What this doesn’t replace

A day on a ladder stays a day on a ladder. What these change is that the calves get moved through range several times instead of being held once, the holding shoulder is not always the same one, and the neck goes the other way now and then. That is a modest, real difference by the evening. It is not equivalent to doing the same work from a platform or a tower where you can stand flat and shift your weight, and if that option exists on the job it is better than everything on this page.

When to come down, and when it isn’t the ordinary kind

Come down if you feel unsteady or light-headed, if your grip is starting to fail, or if you catch yourself reaching sideways rather than moving the ladder. None of those are movement problems and none of them are solved by anything written above.

Calf and forearm ache that eases in the evening is the ordinary kind. Pain that travels down a leg or an arm, numbness or pins and needles that persist after you are on the ground, or a shoulder that will not lift the next morning, are clinician questions. Chest pain or breathlessness needs urgent medical attention, not a stretch — and not from the top of a ladder.
